17: Becoming Doctor Strange: Master the Mystic Arts of Comma Usage in English

  • Date: June 11, 2021; 4pm–6pm c.t.
  • Room: via Zoom
  • Instructor: Mark Olival-Bartley, M. A.
  • Language: English
  • Registration: June 1, 2021–June 8, 2021

Description

There is no gainsaying that the wizardry involved in mastering English commas is indeed strange. If it's any consolation, native speakers of English themselves, like the sorcerer’s apprentice, regularly make ghastly errors with commas. Of course, one needn’t travel to Kathmandu to learn that commas are used differently in German and English (or that they are frequently used differently in various varieties of English). This hands-on workshop will introduce (and seek to simplify) the seemingly mystical conventions of (and rationales behind) comma use in academic writing and provide you with an opportunity to practice what's been preached.
