28: Using Transitions Effectively

  • Date: January 31, 2020, 12-2 pm c.t.
  • Room: Ludwigstr. 28, back building, Room 503
  • Presenter: Mark Olival-Bartley, M.A.
  • Registration: starting December 1, 2019

Workshop description

Consider, for the moment, the mobility of Spider-Man: Unable to fly like Superman, he swings from building to building, using gravity and momentum to travel through the air. Similarly, the writer of academic English glides along cityscapes of ideas and research via threads of rhetorical transition. In this two-hour workshop, we will learn transitional types (transitional words, transitional phrases, and transitional clauses), transitional sites (within sentences, between sentences, and between paragraphs), and transitional uses (for exemplification, for reformulation, for acknowledgement, et cetera); we will also practice using transitions in exercises of academic writing.

Target group: all students
